DEVOURING CARTOGRAPHY
2018, HD video
On Google Maps, dynamic visuals and interactive ergonomics from a virtual body (360° Street View + bird view) make us witnesses of a freezed world we get the illusion to own. Aiming for a global inventory, providing an aerial viewpoint close to a "God vision", and technological development of satellite imagery being paired with military domination (cf Iraq war), we can draw strong links between mapping and expression and means of power. The feeling of control provocked by the manipulation of this tool merges with Google's strive for omniscience, integrates it, as a displacement of power role. It leads the user to assert the fixed model we virtually explore.
In this context, I've focused on the distortions occurring between the views, accentuated them, pushing the visual datas into the matter of a trip that the viewer doesn't control. Going from significant hubs of transformation and displacement, to volcanos or big cities, the movement could be infinite, tending to the physical unease of a roller coaster, bringing back to our body that has its own space, time and context.
